LG tested the Android operating system waters with the LG GW620. Criticized by some for entering the game relatively late, they have rectified the situation by producing a quality successor to the GW620. Known to retailers as the LG GT540, it is more popularly known as the Optimus. Keeping development costs down by remaining true to the operations of the 620, LG has presented a user friendly, mid-priced smartphone in the Optimus.

The Optimus offers a QWERTY keyboard option that makes typing easier than using word/T9 functions. Though not the smallest handset available on the market, it is still reasonably sized at 109 x 54.5 x 12.7mm. Most pockets will easily accommodate the phone, and you won’t feel weighed down because of the Optimus’s lightweight plastic construction. Light curves are fashioned from the plastic shell, presenting a sleek, smooth appearance to the phone.

Instantly noticeable is the 3-inch resistive touch screen that covers much of the front of the LG Optimus. Even though it is not a capacitive touch screen, it is rather accurate, reducing the chance of errors while navigating or typing. It displays images in HVGA resolution and image quality is ably presented on the TFT display. It exceeds most other models in the middle price range. Images are brought to life with 256K colors and a 320 x 480 pixel resolution.

Two types of home screens are found on the Optimus; the familiar, basic Android home screen and a LG designed, customized version. On the LG version, the user may customize buttons along the lower part of the screen that allow messaging access at any time. Also available are widgets, folders, and shortcuts. There is also the option to operate anywhere from three to seven home screens. The theme of the screens can also be modified.

One area in which the LG Optimus really excels is battery life. Equipped with a 1500mAh lithium-ion battery, the phone offers 1500 hours of standby life and up to 7 hours and 20 minutes of talk time. Many smartphones in its price range, or any other range for that matter, can claim these numbers.

Smartphones, multimedia and voice powerhouses that they are, must feature other gadgets to satisfy the user. An alarm clock, world clock, a dedicated Youtube plug-in, a PDF viewer, voice recorder, and personal organizer just scratch the surface of available applications for the Optimus.

The LG Optimus may be a comparatively entry-level Android phone, but the ease of use works to its benefit. Those new to Android technology will not be left frustrated and experienced users will find plenty of features to keep them happy.
